The spectrum of disordered eating and eating disorders includes various behaviors and symptoms that can overlap and coexist. For example, someone with disordered eating may engage in occasional binge eating or purging behaviors but not meet the full criteria for an eating disorder diagnosis. It is essential to recognize that disordered eating and eating disorders are complex and multifaceted conditions that can be influenced by various biological, psychological, and social factors. Eating is emotional. Food is meant to be enjoyed for the taste, pleasure, and satisfaction it brings us; it's not just a necessity. Cooking, baking, and eating are ways we connect with others and care for ourselves and the people we love. But, it can become problematic when we use food to numb our feelings versus allowing us to feel our emotions. Try to connect with your feelings - it's essential to allow ourselves to feel all emotions, including the bad, so that we can feel the good too! Include multiple mechanisms to cope with difficult feelings, acknowledge your emotion, and connect with hunger/fullness cues when choosing to eat comforting foods and eat in a mindful way versus numbing yourself with food, as this is an ineffective coping skill and won't help you feel any better. Instead, slow down and pay attention. Make eating an active choice. Think about what food will make you feel better at that moment.
